Black History Month Bus and Locomotive Wraps
Project type
Out of Home
Date
2024
Location
Newark, NJ
Created in partnership with NJ TRANSIT's employee resource group B.R.I.D.G.E.S. and funded in part by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, this Black History Month campaign transformed two buses and a locomotive into moving celebrations of Black history, achievement, and cultural impact.
Working closely with B.R.I.D.G.E.S. throughout the concept development process, the theme "Pages From Black History" was selected to honor both historic and contemporary Black leaders whose contributions have shaped society. The vehicle wraps were designed to resemble a library bookshelf, featuring book spines that highlighted notable Black figures alongside their accomplishments, professions, or legacies.
At the center of the design, the profiles of a young boy and girl represented the next generation discovering the stories of those who came before them. Every creative decision was made with intention, from the use of a typeface designed by a Black creator to the incorporation of colors inspired by the Pan-African and Ethiopian flags, longstanding visual symbols of Black heritage and pride.
The campaign extended Black History Month beyond traditional spaces, bringing the celebration directly into communities across New Jersey while highlighting the importance of education, representation, and shared history.
The project was recognized with First Place in Out-of-Home: Vehicle Wraps at the 2023 NJ Ad Club Awards.
